CCS2 — The AC/DC combined connector standard in Europe and several other regions outside North America.

Connector compatibility determines which public charging stations a vehicle can use without an adapter. Automakers have been converging on fewer standards in North America, but adapters remain common for vehicles built before the transition.

Connector Where It’s Used
NACS (North American Charging Standard) Originally Tesla’s connector, now adopted by most major automakers in North America for both AC and DC charging.
CCS1 (Combined Charging System) The former standard for non-Tesla EVs in North America, combining a J1772 AC connector with two DC pins below it.
CHAdeMO An older DC fast-charging standard used mainly by older Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi models; increasingly rare on new vehicles.
J1772 The standard AC connector for Level 1 and Level 2 charging in North America, used by nearly every EV sold before the NACS transition.
CCS2 The AC/DC combined connector standard in Europe and several other regions outside North America.
Practical note

Always check an automaker’s current adapter policy before a long trip — supported connectors and included adapters have changed as the industry consolidates around NACS in North America.
